The Pilates Method

Pilates is a complete system of exercises developed over eighty years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. This is total body conditioning for all bodies of all abilities.  The focus is on breath and movement awareness directed toward the goals of increasing circulation, improving body mechanics, realigning and improving posture, and balancing muscles to create a body able to function efficiently each day.  Joseph Pilates saw this goal as applicable to everyone.

"Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.  It is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capably of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure."

JOSEPH H. PILATES  Excerpt from :  Return to Life

The Technique

The Pilates technique is based on an inspired blend of eastern and western philosophies.  Joseph Pilates designed his work to come from the center and work the body as a unified structure.  All exercises emphasize abdominal strength and core stability, while balancing the rest of the body.  The stabilization created allows freedom of movement throughout the entire body;  it develops by deliberate sequence, dynamic strength, coordination, flexibility , and control from the inside out.

The Mechanics

The mechanics of most exercises are non-weight bearing, and are performed on the Mat (floor) or on specialized equipment designed by Joseph H. Pilates. The main pieces of apparatus use springs for resistance, promoting development of long, lean, flexible muscles. The exercises in each part of the system are complementary and are performed in all planes of motion, using the entire body precisely with each movement, eliminating the need for mindless repetitions.

Is Pilates right for me?

Pilates exercises are accessible to anyone:  young, old, sedentary, or athletic.  Gentle enough for pregnant women, sophisticated enough to challenge the athlete or performer, it is also superb for injury rehabilitation, and is often prescribed by doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists.  Many people use this exercise as a complete fitness program, as a complement to other activities, or as an education program to re-pattern the body to operate in a more efficient daily mode.

The Studio

Pilates at the Bungalow instructors will design a program for each individual based on mutual assessment of your specific needs and goals.  Introductory sessions focus on developing the center of the body to support the spine.  Learning the work is process, rather than an event, and each person will work at his or her own pace. Private one-to-one instruction ensures that progress is directed to each client, who eventually gains the independence to direct his or her own sessions.  As skill and strength increase, more challenging exercises are added and the tempo of the work increases - always to challenge, never tax, the body.

The Goal

The goal is development of a body that consciously moves throughout the daily demands and stresses of life.  Practitioners experience well-being, improved posture, and efficient motion originating from the center of a flexible, lean, strong body - balanced from within.
